"The success in our communities, I think, is really evident in our advanced level courses, our AP and pre-AP courses. To many of our small rural districts, when we started the project, they did not have any AP courses or pre-AP courses. That was just something that a small, rural district couldn't even think of. So, being able to, through GEAR UP, plant that seed of the importance of rigorous courses to give them the opportunity for professional development, to have a very small school district, and the one I'm thinking of has 30 students in an entire grade level. When you have a district like that, that went from having zero students planning to go to college to at the end of the first project when they graduated in that class that year was 20-something and 17 of those students already had college hours. To me, that's a tremendous success and that's what we are, we're building dreams in the community that here-to-for, college wasn't a reality and not even a dream and we've really given them tools to offer that as a reality."
