"Don't come teach with us in GEAR UP if you just want to do worksheets and you're just trying to remediate kids because that's not what we're here for. We're trying to engage the kids and remind them that learning is fun, learning is exciting. I guess our ultimate goal with this, college aside, is to create life-long learners and to have the students really understand that learning can be fun. This summer, we're doing a crime scene investigation theme throughout and so our students are doing English, math and science among the crime scene investigation, CSI theme, which the eighth graders love. But, in addition to that we still have book clubs that go on through the summer. We have the summer reading program where all the students get a book to read over the summer and the teachers have even gotten very excited with that and want to pull some of that into activities to start the ninth grade year. The teachers were just overwhelmed that we would purchase a book for a kid."
