Brief Description of Program:
The UTEP GEAR UP program provides a strong tutoring and mentoring component by UTEP students, academic readiness testing, positive coping and life skills, quality transition events, and exposure to postsecondary degree environments. In addition, the program concentrates on providing parents and teachers with the awareness of success factors for the GEAR UP cohort, utilizes different mediums to impress upon parents the significance of their support for the future of their children and provides them with the knowledge of the benefits and accessibility of postsecondary education and financial aid availability. Staff development addresses technology-based curriculums for mathematics and science, preparing students for academic readiness in high school and beyond, and strategies that fortify teacher skills in increasing students’ ability to relate academics to everyday experiences.
