Setting Good Intentions

After a long day of planning, working, and stressing, nothing takes the edge off like a good yoga workout or relaxing meditation. Many adults have discovered the magic of dedicating some time to living in the moment, but until now it’s rarely been used as a strategy to work with students. But thanks to organizations like the Holistic Life Foundation (HLF), the serenity of meditation has made its way into the classroom—and the results have been quite promising.

Working with HLF, one Baltimore elementary school has replaced detention with meditation since its implementation of meditation and yoga strategies in 2015. Remarkably, in that time the school has reported zero suspensions and a noticeable increase in attendance. Instead of being sent to the dark, foreboding principal’s office of the past, unruly students retreat to the 'Mindful Moment Room,' where they use deep breathing and silent meditation to diffuse anger and frustration. But these newly acquired techniques aren't limited to the classroom. HLF’s testimonials have shown that students who've participated in the program often take these practices home with them, encouraging mindfulness across an even broader spectrum. So even though classroom chaos can be fun, there's probably no better way to start your day than with a little group namaste.
