Know the Code

Ready to have your mind blown a little bit? If current trends continue, by 2020 there will be 1.4 million computing jobs, but only 400,000 computer-science students. That means there will be a whopping 1,000,000 jobs available that can be filled by anyone with programming skills—no matter what their gender, race or background may be. The most logical solution? Create a new generation of programming whizzes, naturally.

Code.org is already on the case. They’re a non-profit organization dedicated to growing interest and participation in computer-science education in schools across the nation—as well as inspiring passion for programming in girls and underrepresented students. And their website happens to be chock-full of fantastic resources that educators can use with kids of all ages. You’ll find curriculum, intro activities, videos (many with famous faces), partnership information, and promotional materials to help build a major buzz about coding in your school. Hey, you might even learn a little programming yourself. (Watch out, Mark Zuckerberg…)
