What's in a Name?

In the world of education there are catchy names for all kinds of skill sets and curriculum plans. You’ve got terms like “STEM,” “Common Core,” and “Blended Learning,” to name just a few. But what on earth should we call those skills that are most desired by the workplace of today (a.k.a. “the real world”)? It seems like everybody has taken a crack at coming up with one overarching term that encompasses it all, and they’ve all basically struck out.

Thankfully, NPR has provided a handy glossary for skills that are just as crucial to teach as any of the academia-based competencies. Spend more time teaching these techniques and less time figuring out what to call them. Keep this list handy and feel free to coin your own phrases, since the landscape of practical job-related skills changes about as often as that ‘word of the day’ calendar on your desk.
